PaperPort is designed to help users to organize digital documents and files. As a document management system, PaperPort is useful for working with scanned documents. PaperPort can use its built-in optical character recognition to create "searchable" PDF files that allow efficient 'index and search' with appropriate software, such as Microsoft's Windows Search.

paprport.exe executes as a process with the local user's privileges. It configures an autoplay handler withing explorer.exe named PaperPort11AutoPlay that will launch the program automatically. The file is digitally signed by Nuance Communications which was issued by the VeriSign certificate authority (CA). Note, some antivirus scanners have flagged this file, however it is not necessarily considered malware (see below for details).
